E-Commerce Build + Growth Strategy
Coastal Paws Pet Supply has been a Mandarin neighborhood staple since 2015. Owners Rachel and Tom Whitfield built the business on curated, premium pet products that you can't find at PetSmart or Chewy: raw diet ingredients sourced from local farms, handmade collars and leashes from Jacksonville artisans, and a self-serve dog wash station that's perpetually booked on weekends.
The store generated $420K annually in foot traffic revenue, but growth had plateaued. The Mandarin market was saturated; everyone who was going to discover them in-store already had. Meanwhile, their most popular products, particularly their curated raw food bundles and the "Jacksonville Beach Dog" gift boxes, consistently sold out at the store and had waiting lists. Customers kept asking, "Can I order this online?"
Rachel had tried listing products on Etsy and Amazon, but both platforms buried their listings behind established sellers, took significant commission cuts (15-30%), and offered zero brand-building opportunity. She couldn't control the customer experience, couldn't build an email list, and couldn't differentiate Coastal Paws from a thousand other generic pet supply sellers.
The real opportunity was in the niche they'd carved out: premium, curated pet products with a story behind each one. Their average in-store transaction was $47, more than double the typical pet store, because customers trusted Rachel's curation. The challenge was replicating that trust and curation experience online, where every product competes with Amazon's infinite catalog.
Instead of trying to compete with Chewy on selection, we built the store around what made Coastal Paws special: Rachel's expert curation, the local sourcing story, and the community of Jacksonville pet owners who trust her recommendations.
Rather than a traditional product catalog organized by category, we structured the store around curated collections: "Rachel's Top Picks for Anxious Dogs," "Raw Diet Starter Kit," "Jacksonville Beach Day Essentials," "Senior Dog Comfort Bundle," and seasonal collections like "Hurricane Season Prep Kit for Pet Owners." Each collection had a story written by Rachel explaining why she selected each product, creating editorial-style shopping experiences that built trust and increased average order value. The "Build Your Bundle" tool let customers create custom product bundles at a 15% discount, driving higher AOV.
We built on Shopify Plus to support the complexity of shipping perishable raw food (temperature-controlled packaging requirements), local same-day delivery within Jacksonville (integrated with a local courier), and subscription auto-ship for consumable products. The subscription feature alone generates 34% of monthly online revenue. We also built a pet profile system where customers register their pet's breed, age, weight, and dietary restrictions, then receive personalized product recommendations. This personalization engine drives 28% higher conversion rates than non-personalized browsing.
Each product page was a mini education piece. Instead of just "Organic Chicken Raw Dog Food, 5lb," we wrote detailed descriptions covering ingredients, sourcing (from a farm in St. Augustine), nutritional benefits, feeding guidelines by dog weight, and transitioning tips for dogs new to raw diets. We also created 24 long-form guides: "Complete Guide to Raw Feeding for Dogs in Florida's Climate," "Best Flea and Tick Prevention for Jacksonville Dogs," and "How to Choose the Right Harness for Your Dog's Breed." These guides ranked for informational queries and funneled readers to relevant products.
We launched with a local-first strategy, capturing Jacksonville customers through Google Shopping, local SEO, and an email campaign to the store's existing 3,200-person mailing list. Once we validated product-market fit online (month 2), we expanded targeting to Florida, then the Southeast, then nationally. We ran targeted Facebook and Instagram ads to lookalike audiences based on existing customer data, with creative featuring Rachel's expertise and the Jacksonville sourcing story. The "local pet expert goes national" narrative resonated strongly with pet owners tired of faceless Amazon sellers.
Pet supplies are the perfect recurring-purchase category. We built a points-based loyalty program ("Paws Points") integrated with both the Shopify store and the in-store POS system, meaning local customers could earn and redeem points across both channels. We automated a post-purchase email flow with feeding tips, product care instructions, and timed product replenishment reminders based on average consumption rates. The "Coastal Paws Club" subscription tier offered exclusive products, early access to new items, and a quarterly curated box shipped automatically.
By month 9, online revenue exceeded in-store revenue for the first time, and the business had transformed from a single-location retail store into a multi-channel brand:

I started this store because I believed pet owners deserved better than what big box stores offered. Now we're proving that nationally. Our online customers in Seattle and Denver trust my recommendations the same way my Mandarin neighbors do, and that's because the website captures who we really are. We hired four new employees this year just for e-commerce fulfillment.
The e-commerce launch also revitalized in-store sales. Online brand visibility drove a 22% increase in foot traffic from customers who discovered Coastal Paws online and lived locally. Rachel is now exploring a second retail location in St. Augustine and has been approached by three pet industry investors interested in the direct-to-consumer model. Total business revenue increased from $420K to $1.2M annually.
We've helped Jacksonville businesses go from zero to six-figure monthly e-commerce revenue. Let's talk about your product line.
