8-Month Reputation Recovery
Ember & Oak Kitchen had been a San Marco dining institution for six years. Chef-owner Natasha Reyes built a loyal following with her wood-fired Southern-Mediterranean fusion menu, earning "Best New Restaurant" from Jacksonville Magazine in 2020 and consistent 4.6★ ratings across Google, Yelp, and TripAdvisor.
Then she made what should have been a smart business decision: a kitchen renovation to add a dedicated pastry station and expand the bar program. The three-month renovation ran seven months. During that period, the restaurant operated from a temporary kitchen with limited menu options, longer wait times, inconsistent food quality, and visible construction dust that occasionally drifted into the dining room.
The damage was devastating. Over those seven months, Ember & Oak accumulated 94 negative reviews, many from previously loyal regulars who felt betrayed by the decline in experience. The Google rating plummeted from 4.6★ to 3.1★. Yelp was worse at 2.8★. Food bloggers posted viral negative reviews. A local Facebook group thread titled "What happened to Ember & Oak?" had 200+ comments.
By the time the renovation finished and the kitchen was better than ever, the reputational damage was already done. Weekend reservations dropped 55%. Catering inquiries, which had been a $15K/month revenue stream, nearly stopped entirely. The 3.1★ rating sat like a scarlet letter on every search result. Natasha estimated the restaurant had six months of runway before she'd have to close.
This was a reputation rescue, not just management. The restaurant was genuinely excellent again after the renovation; the problem was that the digital record hadn't caught up to reality. Our strategy focused on accelerating the natural recovery process through ethical, sustainable methods.
We audited all 94 negative reviews and categorized them: 71 were directly tied to the renovation period (legitimate complaints about dust, wait times, limited menu), 14 were from competitors or non-customers (flagged for removal), and 9 were pre-existing minor complaints. For the legitimate reviews, Natasha personally responded to each one with a genuine apology, an explanation of the renovation, and an invitation to return for a complimentary tasting of the new menu. The responses were authentic, not corporate template language. Twenty-three of those reviewers returned, and 17 updated their reviews to 4 or 5 stars.
We implemented a QR-code based review request system printed on the check presenter. When diners paid, a small card read: "Loved your meal? Tell Google. Had an issue? Tell Natasha directly," with two QR codes, one linking to Google Reviews and one to a private feedback form. This channel separation was critical: it encouraged satisfied diners to share publicly while giving unhappy guests a private outlet that prevented new negative reviews. We also trained staff to verbally mention the card for tables that visibly enjoyed their experience.
Rather than quietly hoping people would forget, we leaned into the story. We positioned the renovation completion as a grand reopening event, inviting Jacksonville food bloggers, local media, and 50 selected past reviewers (including negative ones) for a complimentary multi-course tasting. We coordinated with Jax Restaurant Reviews, Edible Northeast Florida, and Jacksonville Magazine for coverage. The event generated 32 new 5-star reviews in a single week and press coverage that appeared in Google search results alongside the old negative reviews, giving context to the rating drop.
Google was the priority, but we also simultaneously worked on Yelp (claimed and optimized the business page, responded to all reviews), TripAdvisor (updated photos, menu, and responded to every review), OpenTable (activated the review request feature post-reservation), and Instagram (launched a "Back & Better" content series showing the new kitchen, new dishes, and behind-the-scenes footage). We also optimized the Google Business Profile with 85 new photos of the renovated space, updated menu items, and weekly Google Posts showing new dishes and events.
We set up real-time alerts for any mention of Ember & Oak across Google, Yelp, TripAdvisor, Facebook, Reddit r/Jacksonville, and local food blogs. Any negative review received a response within 4 hours. We also implemented a monthly "reputation health check" that tracked rating trajectory, review velocity, sentiment analysis, and competitive positioning against other San Marco restaurants. The goal was to never let a negative trend accumulate unaddressed again.
Within 8 months, Ember & Oak not only recovered its pre-renovation reputation but exceeded it, becoming the highest-rated sit-down restaurant in the San Marco district:

I was ready to close my restaurant. The renovation nearly killed the business, not because the construction failed, but because the reviews did. Jacksonville SEO Company didn't just fix our ratings; they gave me a system to protect the reputation I spent six years building. We're busier now than we've ever been, and I actually sleep at night.
The most meaningful outcome was the shift in review sentiment. Before the campaign, 64% of recent reviews mentioned the renovation negatively. By month 8, 91% of reviews mentioned specific dishes, the ambiance of the new space, or the quality of service. The narrative had completely shifted from "this place went downhill" to "this is the best it's ever been." Natasha has since opened a second location in Ponte Vedra with our reputation management system built in from day one.
We'll audit your online reputation across every platform and show you exactly where you stand against Jacksonville's top-rated restaurants.
